Upper School - Program Description

In a supportive and encouraging student/faculty culture, students in the 7th -12th grades, or Upper School, form unique student/teacher relationships. Students will find their teachers accessible and easily approachable, and that the small class sizes allow teachers to accommodate their unique personality and learning style.

To further encourage our students to take advantage of the opportunities Doane Academy has to offer, each Upper School student is assigned an advisor. Upper School faculty members serve as advisors to the students, acting as both a mentor/advocate and advisor of academic and student life matters. Each advisor is typically assigned 8-10 advisees; students remain with the same advisor until their graduation. In the Upper School 9th-12th grade schedule, students meet with their advisors on a daily basis. During this “Advisory Period”, students are encouraged to speak with their advisor, use the time to work on studies, if needed, seek additional help from teachers or conduct organization or club meetings.

The Upper School schedule is different for each student, allowing them to take courses based on their ability in each subject. All academic departments offer general college prep courses, many offer Honor and AP options or individual courses. We are proud that many of our students take advantage of the AP opportunity, as 17% of our seniors over the last two years have earned the recognition as either AP scholars or distinguished AP scholars.

See below for an idea of an Upper School student schedule.
