Character Development - Restructuring
Several significant changes in the organization of the school have been undertaken specifically with the intention of strengthening leadership and character development.
- Adding an almost full time Athletic Director position has dramatically overhauled the ability of the school to expect, encourage, keep in touch of and award student effort and performance.
- All student organizations including Student Council have undergone comprehensive structural reorganization. The final organizational documents are due mid year 2008-09. A clear statement of purpose for each organization is a required component. Among other things, each organization must include leadership development as part of its statement of purpose. Student Council has a coordinating/governance responsibility over all other organizations. They are responsible for planning at least one Leadership Summit in the spring of the year.
- The role of the individual student advisors, the class advisors, student organization advisors and the school family advisors is being strengthened through professional development both in house and through workshops and school visitations. The advisor role is critical in terms of the school knowing each student and encouraging them to stretch beyond their limits and use their talents and energy to the maximum. A great advisor has goals, expectations and rapport to move his/her advisees to another level of confidence and enthusiasm.
- There are three expectations of seniors that are reinforced and embraced to a greater extent each year. These expectations include:
- Take the time to really know classmates.
- Support and encourage peers.
- Take over the school.
Every senior has the opportunity and is encouraged to take at least one major leadership role. They are expected to organize, encourage and hold the other students accountable at a faculty level. Seniors and Student Council offices, beginning in 2008-09, are often invited and encouraged to attend faculty meetings, especially when student culture expectations and motivation are on the agenda.
