Visual Arts
Upper School Visual Arts
Doane Academy's art department not only educates the novice "artist" but also provides opportunities for the serious art student who intends on making art a career. Our students participate in local, county and state exhibitions where they regularly win awards at the New Jersey County and State levels.
Doane Academy's Scholar artists are selected by their instructor's to join the National Arts Honors Society. The NAHS strives not only to help its members attain their highest potential in various artistic pursuits, but also endeavors to bring art awareness to the school and its community through art exhibits and activities.
Beyond the art studio at Doane Academy our students may take weekend workshop classes at a reduced rate at Tyler School of Art and Moore College of Art and Design. Recent alumni have attended and are currently attending Muhlenburg College (art education), Savannah College of Art and Design (fashion design, graphic design), Drexel University (graphic design), University of the Arts (film), School of Visual Arts and Tyler School of Art of Temple University. Alumni have gone on to careers in the arts including an animator for Sesame Street, photographer for the NY Times, and a children's book illustrator.

Lower School Visual Arts
Lower School students (PreK-6) attend visual art classes with an art specialist. Doane Academy believes art is an integral part of the Lower School curriculum. Children who are encouraged to express through art, their thoughts, feelings, and imaginations are broadened and enriched.
The visual arts program provides the maximum opportunity for all students to have hands-on experiences in developing their individual creative expression and a deeper appreciation for art. During their time in class, students gain knowledge about different art forms, artists, cultures, art movements, and materials, and how to properly use them. Projects are based on a variety of themes. These themes come from the art world but also from the students' classroom. Through combined efforts of the classroom teachers and the art teacher, many projects connect with what the students are learning in their classroom. All grades learn the importance of experimenting and craftsmanship.
