DOANE ACADEMY RECEIVES AMERICAN FLAG CARRIED IN COMBAT MISSION OVER IRAQ

On Tuesday, February 16, 2010, Brigadier General James J. Grant, Chief of the Joint Staff of the New Jersey Army National Guard, CW3 Frank R. Albanese, State Family Program Director for the New Jersey Army National Guard, and Staff Sergeant Carl C. Zendrosky, Specialist Timothy D. Lynch, and Specialist Samantha R. Conover, all of the HHC and A Co 1-150th Air Assault Battalion of the New Jersey Army National Guard will present the students of Doane Academy with a United States flag carried on a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter during a combat mission in Iraq.

Last fall, on the anniversary of 9/11, the third and fourth grade students at Doane Academy wrote letters to the troops in Iraq thanking them for their service and reassuring them that they were not forgotten. The students were thrilled to receive photographs over the Internet showing their letters actually being delivered in Iraq. They also received pictures of the United States flag that was carried in their honor, as a gesture of thanks for the letters, on October 30, 2009. The students were so excited by the pictures, they asked if they could do something more for “their soldiers.” The entire Doane Academy Lower School became involved. The 88 Lower School students made over 90 Christmas tree decorations, 120 holiday greeting cards, and collected 5 large cartons of snack items for the troops.

“Their soldiers” all returned safely to New Jersey in January, 2010, and everyone at Doane Academy thanks them and wishes them well.
